Medical Data Integration Center (MeDIC)

For the Faculty of Medicine of the University Münster, a Medical Data Integration Center (MeDIC) has been established. The MeDIC is embedded into the Institute of Medical Informatics. Main goal of the MeDIC is to implement an inter-facility research data infrastructure with many partners within the Medical Informatics Initiative of the BMBF that will be a hub between patient care and research. On this basis, the MeDIC provides researchers with solutions for data analysis and exchange, re-use of data, and data publication in clinical research according to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

What is a Data Integration Center?

The consortia of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) have set up Data Integration Centres (DIC) at their university medical sites. These new facilities collect research and care data from a university hospital, with data quality and data protection playing an essential role. The DIC is usually a facility within the hospital and is generally closely linked to the clinical computing centres, thus ensuring a close connection to the systems of patient care.

Data use

In the MeDIC, data from care and research are merged to support innovations in medical research for the benefit of patients. As far as possible, the data will be used pseudonymously or anonymously. Data security and protection of patients’ interests are the top priority. Therefore, the use of the data is subject to a strict data protection concept, which only allows release of personal data in exceptional cases (and with consent of patients). Usually, patient data does not leave the MeDIC. The evaluation is carried out by specially trained personnel. The transfer of data that has already been evaluated and summarized does not allow to identify individual patients.
